Many homeowners board their loft for storage by laying chipboard directly on top of the ceiling joists. The problem is that this compresses the insulation beneath, dramatically reducing its effectiveness. A standard joist is 100mm deep, but current insulation standards require 270mm — so laying boards directly on joists squashes your insulation to less than half the recommended depth.
